Self Confidence: Confidence in oneself or one's abilities.
Self Esteem: Pride in oneself, self respect.
My best friend was researching trying to come up with the best speech possible on self confidence, and it got me thinking, "How many people commonly confuse self confidence with self esteem?" Apparently, a lot. While some people's range of understanding on both subjects usually are more than less correct, many people don't realize that they are not completely interchangeable.
To have self confidence is exactly as the name suggests, you are CONFIDENT. (Mind you, confidence and arrogance are borderline to one another, so please don't cross that threshold to douchebag arrogance or someone will want to punch you in the throat.) You have to have the knowledge and understanding that you are capable of what you are doing and what you are able to do. This comes with practice and learning abilities unrelated to how you feel purely about yourself as a whole.
Self esteem, however, is how you feel about yourself as a whole. To have self esteem is to take pride in yourself, and to respect yourself. Many things add to this, such as how you feel about how you look, how you feel about what you are capable of doing, and how you feel about other people's reactions toward you and what you are wearing or doing. Self esteem is the hardest thing for me to grasp. But I'm working on it.
